2023 JuliusErwin Invitational

August 14, 2023, Carlton Trail

Robert Menzies survived a rocky start to win his session 1 match against Nick Carlson in a playoff hole, then cruised to a 4&3 victory over Clayton Bangsund during session 2 and went on to win his first Navy Jacket and Marlon Cup (i.e. match play champion) with a 1 Up victory (also in an extra playoff hole) over Russell Apland in session 3. In the bronze match, Clayton Bangsund defeated Brian Ingjaldson 2&1 with a tap-in birdie on hole 8. Menzies carded the lowest round of the tournament with a score of 35 in session 2, and won his third JuliusErwin Bowl in the stroke play event with a total score of 117 (+9). The stroke play competition was fiercely contested with only four strokes separating the top six players. Russell Apland dominated the shotmaking competition with the longest drive of 289 yards in session 3, and the closest to the pin of 5’ 6 ½” on hole 1, registered in session 2.

2022 JuliusErwin Invitational

August 15, 2022, Carlton Trail

Electrical storms lit up the night sky and heavy rain pelted the region, threatening cancellation of the third edition of the JuliusErwin Invitational mere hours before the event. Fortunately, the skies cleared just in time for a beautiful day of golf at Carlton Trail, one characterized by hot and humid conditions. The grass was almost sticky and dew on the greens affected their speeds during most of the first two sessions. In the afternoon title match, Clayton Bangsund defeated Jamie Ingjaldson 1 Up, sinking a long-range birdie putt from just off the ninth green for a dramatic walk-off victory. The bronze match was fiercely contested between Brian Ingjaldson and Riley Apland, and required a playoff to decide matters. In his second straight match requiring a playoff, Ingjaldson hit his tee shot on hole 1 to 5’ 8” from the pin, making way for a tap-in par and a 1 Up victory over the elder Apland brother. In the stroke play competition, Robert Menzies bested the field by six strokes with a total score of 112 (+4) to claim his second JuliusErwin Bowl. The fifth place contest between Menzies and Russell Apland produced some of the day’s most intriguing golf. During that match, Menzies, who prevailed 3 & 2, carded the tournament’s only sub-par round of 35 (-1) and earned closest to the pin honours with a tee shot to 4’ 6” on hole 3. Meanwhile, en route to his second consecutive round of 38 (+2), the younger Apland brother hit the longest drive of the tournament with a 308 yard bomb on hole 2.
