Book Release - Bangsund on the Commercial Liens Act of British Columbia

April 21, 2026: I am delighted to announce the release of my most recent book, Bangsund on the Commercial Liens Act of British Columbia, published by the University of Toronto Press. The book is a resource for service providers, lawyers, judges, students, professors, and other business and legal professionals who transact and study in the Province of British Columbia.

In 2025, British Columbia became the second province, behind Saskatchewan, to bring into force the Commercial Liens Act (BCCLA) based on the model Uniform Liens Act, 2000 (ULA) promulgated by the Uniform Law Conference of Canada (ULCC). The BCCLA is a revolutionary statute that enables service providers to protect their trade credit with proprietary interests – liens – in the goods they enhance and preserve. Examples of service providers who are conferred liens under the BCCLA include warehousers, transporters (ground, rail, air, and sea), mechanics, grain dryers, jewelers, computer technicians, and artists. Indeed, the new BCCLA applies for the benefit of service providers across a wide range of business sectors.

On some level, Bangsund on the Commercial Liens Act of British Columbia is an annotated version of the BCCLA. However, statutory provisions are not analyzed in numerical order. Instead, content is organized according to concept, and statutory provisions are discussed in logical sequence. The book is written in plain and concise language supported with statutory text strategically reproduced in block quotes and/or pinpoint statutory citations in accompanying footnotes. Hypothetical scenarios, illustrating the operation and effect of the BCCLA’s provisions, are interspersed throughout. For further instructive effect, self-assessment exercises are presented at the end of most chapters, and corresponding solutions are furnished in an appendix.

Bangsund on the Commercial Liens Act of British Columbia is available for purchase on the University of Toronto Press website. Click on the book’s image or the URL https://utppublishing.com/doi/book/10.3138/9781049804422 for more information about the book and how to order.
